Map of Bharat Varsha: Great India During the Mahabharata

Posted on January 14, 2007

In my travels on the web, I found an excellent map of Greater Bharat(India) from the time of the Mahabharata. It shows, in detail, the name of the various cities/towns/settlements and mountain ranges and kingdoms from way, way back. The map itself claims that the period is around the 6th century BC, but the historical accuracy might be questionable. Suffice it to say that this map will help you understand where the different kingdoms and places mentioned in the Mahabharata were located.

The Indian Ocean isn’t called Indian Ocean??? What is that thing?! (Although in antiquity, maybe it wasn’t called that.)

Interesting map, though. Where did you get this, anyway?

“that” = “Indian Ocean”, by the way.

Namaste. I am from Argentina, South America. I am doing a research about varnasrama and of course Mahabharata is a big big issue for me. This map is a very handy tool for me, so thank you for your work.

My main interest is also Sri Krishna, since the main goal of varnasrama is Krishna`s satisfaction.

    Sankirtana yajña ki… jaya!

There is one major mistake in it. Rajagriha was the capital of magadha till 5th century BC before pataliputra and is located in Bihar near Patna. The map wrongly shows it in Punjab. Rajagriha’s remains are now called Rajgir archaeological site maintained by archaeological society of India. Pataliputra was not a city when Buddha came to magadha. capital was shifted from Rajgir to Pataliputra later by Udayana, son of Ajathashathru.
There are many more other kingdoms and towns at the time of Bharat war which can be included in this map.

If this map is from the Sixth century BC then it really cannot be said that it refletcs the period of the Mahabharta as some state that the actual epic took place a few thousands years prior to this date. But overall an interesting map.

I am extremely happy and proud to about my ancestry being born in this Punya Bjumi Bharat Varsha.

But traditionally we know that Bharat was made up of 56 desas or kingdoms

Can you please give the names of the remaining kingdoms and show them at the appropriate places in the map?

This nails the lie that there was no such thing as India before the British came and only they unified it

After Ram Rajya, Mahabharat was indeed “Mahan Akhand Bharat”, approximately 3100 years BC,

It is sad, a culture which dates five thousand years and beyond, which has dealt with all forms of invasion, and infiltration(from within and without) is now being divided into smaller and smaller states with non-Hinduism(Sanatan Dharma) as its ideology.

It is also painful to see Nepal, the only Hindu Country(officially) being targetted by communism(nastik ideology)

It is also painful to see the demand to create new sub states within Bharath(a secular state).

It is only when the element of “Dharma” and “Truth” prevail will the opposing evil called pseudoreligious-fundamentalism give way to nationalism.

    Jai Maha Bharath.

  27. Indian June 17, 2010 4:25 am

if dharm which is righteousness and truth must prevail then India will be MAHA BHARATH.

but religion without truth and righteousness will cause any Nation to disintegrate.

  28. Praveen Jain July 27, 2010 10:08 am

what has been taken as base for deciding this period ?
